What The Noise Coming From Your Car Means

February 6th, 2024 by

Noises can sometimes give you great clues as to what issues your car is facing and can help indicate service requirements before things get out of hand. Noises indicate symptoms of a potential problem from your car and no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, as it is always better to be safe rather than sorry.

Squealing Brakes:

Squealing or grinding sounds can be due to the brake pads or shoes being worn down, or in other words your car may not have enough brake pad thickness to keep the metal components from touching. Metal parts rubbing together cause premature failure. If you catch this early, you may only need to replace your brake pads.   When brake parts are worn out, they’ll lose effectiveness to point where they might fail completely. Once this level of damage occurs, your braking system may become unsafe and unpredictable.

Hissing Sound Coming From Engine:

Hissing sounds coming from your engine can suggest that it is overheating. And as a result, engine fluids could be leaking onto hot engine parts. This could cause damage to your engine and are also dangerous fire hazards. NEVER open a hot radiator cap on any vehicle.

Knocking Or Pinging Sound:

If your engine makes knocking or pinging sounds which get worse as you accelerate, this could indicate that parts deep inside your engine have worn out. It could also be a fuel related problem.

Grinding:

Any sound similar to grinding requires immediate attention. This could be the transmission, bearings, timing chain or any number of costly repair items.
