Does the Toyota Tacoma Come in a Hybrid?

Yes. The 2026 Tacoma's i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is the hybrid answer. It comes standard on the Trailhunter and TRD Pro, and it is an available option on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.

Gas i-FORCE vs. i-FORCE MAX Hybrid, Explained

Two different engines under one truck name

The standard i-FORCE is a 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder that runs on gas alone. On the SR it makes 228 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. Step up to SR5 or higher and the same engine is tuned for 278 hp and 317 lb-ft.

The i-FORCE MAX takes that same turbo engine and adds an electric motor between the engine and the 8-speed automatic. The combined output jumps to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, a big gain in low-end pulling power that shows up the moment you tow a trailer or crawl a grade.

How to actually get the hybrid

If you want the i-FORCE MAX and you are shopping TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, or Limited, you have to select it at order or build time. It does not come bundled automatically with any other option package on those three trims. Trailhunter and TRD Pro skip the question entirely. Every Trailhunter and TRD Pro is an i-FORCE MAX truck, full stop, and neither trim can be ordered with the gas-only engine.

SR, SR5, and TRD PreRunner buyers do not have a hybrid path at all right now. If the hybrid powertrain is the deciding factor, your search starts at TRD Sport.

The honest trade-off: towing and mpg do not simply improve across the board

More horsepower does not mean more towing here. The best-equipped gas i-FORCE configuration tows up to 6,500 lbs, while the heavier i-FORCE MAX tops out at 6,000 lbs. The hybrid trades a little max tow capacity for the extra low-end torque that makes everyday driving and moderate towing feel stronger.

Fuel economy tells a similar split story. The gas i-FORCE is EPA-estimated at 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway in RWD form, or 19 city and 24 highway in 4WD. The i-FORCE MAX is estimated at roughly 22 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, figures that vary by trim and configuration. The hybrid wins in city driving and stop-and-go traffic. The gas RWD truck actually holds its own, and even wins, on the highway. Neither engine is the automatic answer for every kind of driving.

For Tuscaloosa and Northport commuters running Skyland Boulevard and McFarland Boulevard traffic every day, that city-mpg gain from the i-FORCE MAX is where the hybrid earns its keep. For buyers logging long highway miles toward Birmingham or Hoover, the gas i-FORCE is worth a real look before assuming hybrid is the better mpg pick.

Tacoma Hybrid FAQ

Does the Toyota Tacoma come in a hybrid?

Yes. The 2026 Tacoma offers the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. It comes standard on the Trailhunter and TRD Pro trims and is available as an option on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.

What is the difference between the Tacoma's i-FORCE engine and the i-FORCE MAX hybrid?

The standard i-FORCE is a 2.4-liter turbo gas engine making 228 hp on SR or 278 hp on SR5 and above. The i-FORCE MAX pairs that same turbo engine with an electric motor for 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque.

Which Tacoma trims come standard with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid?

Trailhunter and TRD Pro ship with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid as the only powertrain. Neither trim is available with the gas-only engine.

Can you add the hybrid powertrain to a Tacoma SR or SR5?

No. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid is not offered on the SR, SR5, or TRD PreRunner trims. Those three trims run the gas-only i-FORCE engine with no hybrid option.

Does the hybrid Tacoma tow less than the gas model?

Yes, slightly. The i-FORCE MAX tows up to 6,000 lbs, while the best-equipped gas i-FORCE configuration tows up to 6,500 lbs. The hybrid trades a little max tow rating for more low-end torque.

What gas mileage does the 2026 Tacoma i-FORCE MAX get?

The i-FORCE MAX is EPA-estimated at roughly 22 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, and exact figures vary by trim. Confirm the EPA numbers for your configuration at fueleconomy.gov before you buy.
