Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, and a locking rear differential turn the right Tacoma trim into a real trail truck. Not every Tacoma trim gets this gear. Here is where it earns its keep, on the forest roads into Bankhead and Talladega National Forests, both within about two hours of Tuscaloosa.
Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, and a locking rear differential are not on every 2026 Tacoma. They come standard on TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro, the three trims Toyota built for real trail use. SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, and Limited do not get this hardware, no matter how the truck is optioned.
The i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain follows a separate set of rules. It is optional on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited, and standard on Trailhunter and TRD Pro. A buyer could option a Limited with i-FORCE MAX and still not get Crawl Control, because Limited is built for comfort, not the trail. Trim level and powertrain do not automatically travel together.
TRD Off-Road is the value entry point. It carries all three trail systems standard and adds i-FORCE MAX as an option instead of a requirement. That combination, gas or hybrid, is the trim this guide is built around. Browse current TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX inventory to see what is on the lot right now.
TRD Off-Road with i-FORCE MAX. It is the entry point to Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, and the locking rear diff, without stepping up to Trailhunter pricing.
TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX, the trim this guide is built around.
Bankhead National Forest sits in northwest Alabama, roughly 60 miles north of Tuscaloosa on AL-69. Its Sipsey Wilderness holds some of the last old-growth forest left in the state, and its trailheads see hikers, hunters, and paddlers year-round. The Sipsey Wilderness itself is closed to motor vehicles, so a Tacoma stays on the forest roads leading to the trailheads, not inside the wilderness boundary.
Those forest roads are unpaved, and rain turns sections of them into ruts, washouts, and standing water fast. Crawl Control holds a set crawl speed and lets the driver focus on steering, while the truck manages throttle and braking at each wheel. On a rutted forest road, that means holding momentum through a washout without stabbing the brake or spinning a tire.
Multi-Terrain Select adjusts throttle response and traction control for the surface underneath the truck, from mud and sand to rock and shallow water. A drive to a Sipsey trailhead can cross all four in a single mile. Switching modes on the fly is built for exactly that kind of change.
TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX. Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select come standard, and the hybrid's low-end torque helps on the steep pulls in and out of the Sipsey drainage.
TRD Off-Road exterior, built for roads like the ones into Bankhead National Forest.
The Oakmulgee Ranger District of Talladega National Forest sits about 30 miles southeast of Tuscaloosa, near Brent and Centreville on AL-25. It is closer to the dealership than Bankhead, and its gravel and dirt forest roads see heavy use from hunters, anglers working the Cahaba River, and campers looking for a primitive site off the grid.
An open differential sends power to whichever rear wheel has the least grip, which is the wrong wheel the moment one tire lifts off a rut or a washboard section. The Tacoma's electronically controlled locking rear diff forces both rear wheels to turn at the same speed, so power still reaches the wheel that has traction. On loose gravel and eroded low spots common on Oakmulgee's forest roads, that is the difference between crawling through and getting stuck.
This is standard equipment on TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro, activated with a switch on the dash. It works alongside Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select, not as a replacement for either. Browse our Tacoma inventory to see which trims come equipped with all three systems.
Trailhunter, if the plan includes an overnight at Payne Lake. The Old Man Emu suspension rides better loaded with camp gear over successive days on rough forest roads.
Trailhunter, built for multi-day trips like an Oakmulgee overnight.
The i-FORCE MAX pairs a 2.4-liter turbo four with an electric motor for 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. That torque arrives instantly, which matters more at 2 mph over a rock ledge than it does merging onto I-359 toward campus. The same low-end pull that eases a slow crawl also makes the truck feel unhurried in daily Tuscaloosa traffic.
EPA estimates put the i-FORCE MAX around 23 to 24 mpg combined, a step up from the standard i-FORCE gas engine's city numbers in 4WD trims. A Tacoma that spends five days a week on Skyland Boulevard and one day on a forest road does not need two different trucks to do both jobs well.
Max towing on i-FORCE MAX trims runs up to 6,000 lbs, enough for a mid-size camper or a loaded utility trailer. Start a finance application before your visit if you already know which trim fits the job.
TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX again. It is the only combination that pairs the hybrid torque with the trail hardware at the lowest price point in the lineup.
The 12.3-in digital gauge cluster, part of the daily-drive side of the Tacoma.

No. Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, and the locking rear differential are standard only on TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro. SR5 does not offer the i-FORCE MAX hybrid option either, and it does not carry any of that trail hardware.
No. The Sipsey Wilderness inside Bankhead National Forest is closed to motor vehicles under its federal wilderness designation. A Tacoma reaches the trailheads on the surrounding Forest Service roads, then hikers continue on foot.
It adjusts throttle mapping and traction control for a specific surface, such as mud, sand, rock, or shallow water. The driver selects the mode that matches the terrain, and the truck tunes its response to keep traction without extra input from the driver's foot.
Standard. TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro all include the electronically controlled locking rear differential with no upcharge. It is not available on SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, or Limited.
About 60 miles, roughly an hour and 15 minutes north on AL-69 through Northport and into Winston County, home to most of the Bankhead district.
The Oakmulgee District's forest roads are open to licensed street vehicles, including 4WD trucks, but the district is not a designated OHV park. Stay on established forest roads, respect seasonal gate closures, and check current Forest Service conditions before a trip.
Yes. The electric motor adds torque at the bottom of the rev range, before the turbo engine spools up. That means more usable pull at idle-out crawling speeds, which is exactly the speed range Crawl Control operates in.
Road and closure conditions on national forest land change with weather and season. Check current status with the U.S. Forest Service, National Forests in Alabama before any trip.
