Two Things Worth Understanding Before You Choose

The Towing Gap Is the Whole Decision for Some Buyers

Five thousand pounds against three thousand five hundred is not a rounding difference. It is the line between pulling a mid-size boat comfortably and being at the edge of the rating.

If you tow, this page is already over. Take the gas model. The hybrid's fuel economy cannot buy back a tow rating you need on a Saturday morning at the Lake Tuscaloosa ramp, and nobody enjoys towing at the limit of what a vehicle is rated for.

The Hybrid Premium Pays Back on Mileage, Not on Principle

The hybrid runs roughly $1,600 to $2,000 above the comparable gas trim. Going from 24 mpg combined to about 36 is a real gap, and on a 60-mile-each-way Birmingham commute it closes that premium reasonably quickly.

On a five-mile run to Northport and back, it does not, and we will tell you so. Buying a hybrid you do not drive enough to use is just a more expensive Highlander. Work out your actual annual miles first.

Trims and Pricing

2026 Highlander Lineup, Gas and Hybrid

Toyota dropped the LE for 2026 and made all-wheel drive standard on everything. The XLE is now where the lineup starts.

MSRP figures were compiled from Toyota and reputable third-party sources and vary slightly between them, so confirm against Toyota's Build and Price tool. Fuel economy and towing figures are manufacturer or EPA estimates and vary with configuration and conditions. Inventory changes weekly, so call to confirm which trims are in stock.

Drive Both

Settle It on Skyland Boulevard

We are at 3325 Skyland Blvd E, just off I-20 and I-59. The turbo and the hybrid feel different from the first hundred feet, and that is genuinely the fastest way to end this decision.

Sales is open 9 AM to 6 PM Monday through Friday and until 5:30 PM Saturday. Coming from Birmingham, Hoover or Bessemer? Call (205) 553-3325 ahead and we will have one of each waiting.

If your third row carries adults rather than occasional kids, look at the Grand Highlander before you decide between these two. Start a trade-in valuation or an online credit application whenever you are ready.

Common Questions

Highlander vs Highlander Hybrid FAQ

Is the Highlander Hybrid worth the extra cost over the gas Highlander?

The hybrid costs roughly $1,600 to $2,000 more than the comparable gas trim and returns about 36 mpg combined against the gas model's 24. Whether that pays back depends entirely on your annual mileage. A 60-mile-each-way Birmingham commuter gets there quickly. Someone driving five miles to Northport and back does not.

Which Highlander can tow more?

The gas Highlander, and by a wide margin. It is rated up to 5,000 pounds against the hybrid's 3,500. If you pull a boat to Lake Tuscaloosa or a camper toward Bankhead National Forest, that 1,500-pound gap is the single most important line on this page.

Does the 2026 Highlander still come with front-wheel drive?

No. For 2026 Toyota made all-wheel drive standard across the entire Highlander lineup, gas and hybrid alike. Toyota also dropped the LE trim, so the XLE is now the entry point. If you are cross-shopping an older listing, that is why the specs look different.

Which Highlander is quicker?

The gas model. Its 2.4-liter turbo makes 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft against the hybrid's 243 net combined horsepower. The turbo also delivers its torque in a way that feels stronger merging onto I-20. The hybrid is smoother in town, but it is not the faster vehicle.

Do you have to plug in the Highlander Hybrid?

No. It is a conventional hybrid that charges its own battery through the engine and regenerative braking. There is no plug and no charging to arrange, which matters if you park on a street or in a campus deck near the University of Alabama.

Which trims can I get as a hybrid?

Hybrid is offered on XLE, Limited and Platinum. The sport-styled XSE is gas only, so if you want the blacked-out sporty look, the hybrid is not an option. That is the one place where the trim you want may decide the powertrain for you.

How does the hybrid handle Bryant-Denny game day traffic?

Better than the gas model does. Stopped in the crawl off Paul W. Bryant Drive, the hybrid shuts its engine off rather than idling. Seven home Saturdays will not pay for the vehicle, but it is the same mechanism that makes the hybrid cheaper to run in daily Tuscaloosa traffic.

Is the Highlander the same as the Grand Highlander?

No. The Grand Highlander is a separate, longer vehicle with a third row adults can actually use and more cargo room behind it. If your third row carries adults rather than occasional kids, look at the Grand Highlander instead of choosing between these two.

Can I drive both on the same visit?

Yes, and it settles the question faster than any spec sheet. The turbo and the hybrid feel genuinely different pulling out of our lot onto Skyland Boulevard. Call (205) 553-3325 and we will have one of each ready when you get here.

Tow or Commute. That Is the Question.

Answer that one honestly and the Highlander picks itself. Come drive both and check.
